CHALLENGE

In its current state, downtown Muncie can be described as an inactive and under-utilized space near the bustling Ball State University. The goal of this design is to encourage social interaction and strengthen the ties between the university and the local community. This is accomplished with a striking and dramatic design in which different types of activities can blossom - inviting unique interactions.

The program includes a design studio, gallery space, woodshop, student housing and a commercial space.

The site, which is conveniently located next to a bus station, is a short bus ride from the university. The design makes use of recycled metals and bricks to pay homage to Muncie’s industrial past to demonstrate how sustainable technology can be used in future downtown development.
